May 2020 Horticulture Show

FLOWERING SHRUBS

CLASS 1- Lilac (Syringa) – single flowering branch
CLASS 2 - Peonies (Paeonia) – single flowering stem
CLASS 3- Azalea – single branch
CLASS 4- Rhododendron – single truss (stem)
Truss should be shown half in bloom and half in bud with one set of leaves entirely surrounding the bottom of the bloom.
CLASS 5 - NJ native – single branch
CLASS 6 - NJ native cultivar – single branch
CLASS 7- Other – single branch

Should be no longer than 24” from the lip of the container to the tip of the branch.


FLOWERING TREES

CLASS 8 - Tree Peony (Paeonia Suffruticosa) - single flowering branch
CLASS 9 - NJ native – single flowering branch
CLASS 10 - NJ native cultivar – single flowering branch
CLASS 11 - Other - single flowering branch

Should be no longer than 24” from the lip of the container to the tip of the branch.


PERENNIALS

CLASS 12 - single stem grown primarily for foliage
CLASS 13 - single stem grown primarily for flowers
CLASS 14 - single stem NJ native
CLASS 15 - single stem NJ native cultivar

Notes for Roses: Spray may not exceed 18” from lip of container to tip of branch and must be shown with two sets of leaves. Single stemmed roses should be shown with side buds removed (disbudded).


BULBS, CORMS, RHIZOMES, TUBERS

CLASS 16 - single flowering stem
CLASS 17 - collection of 3 to 5 stems from different varieties or cultivars, all flowering.
Must have accompanying key card or diagram which indicates name of each entry.
Judged 70% horticultural merit, 20% artistic, 10% nomenclature.

ORCHIDACEAE – ORCHIDS (single plant)

CLASS 18 - Cattelya (‘Corsage Orchid’)
CLASS 19 - Paphiopedilum ('Venus Slipper’)
CLASS 20 - Phalaenopsis (‘Moth Orchid’)
CLASS 21 - Other

Dead pseudobulbs and leaves removed. Leaves should be clean but not treated to produce an artificial shine. Staking is permitted but should be as unobtrusive as possible. Minimum ownership of 3 months for this show.

PAR

CLASS 22 - An exhibit of outstanding horticultural merit which does not qualify for entry elsewhere in the horticulture division. Each exhibit is judged against perfection. Minimum ownership of 6 months is required.


Par judging: Each exhibit is judged individually using a scale of points. With this scoring it’s theoretically possible each entry could get a first!
Points Scale:
-90 -100 first; blue
-85 -89 second; red
-80 -84 yellow; third
-In par judging there are no HMs
