The English Landscape Garden Movement 1750-1900

Garden designer, historian and member of SBGC, Peter Ham talks about the English landscape garden movement from 1750 to 1900.  His presentation explores the three major garden design movements of the era: the Picturesque, the Italianate and the Victorian.  These three movements saw a reaction away from the landscape style of Capability Brown and others towards a 'wild' natural state, the onset of planted flowering gardens as spaces for pleasure and the subsequent introduction of influences from Europe and Empire; these overseas influences included planting styles, garden architecture and follies.  

This is the second of Peter's talks on English garden history.  Many of you will remember his presentation to us on 'Politics in the Garden' covering the 17th and early 18th century. This new talk bridges the period from the landscape garden movement to the influences of William Robinson and Gertrude Jekyll which are the topic of Peter's third talk in a series of four on English garden history.
